Saturday, 5 December 2009. United Against fascism (UAF) staged a counter protest at Notthigham's Old Market Square to demonstrate against English Defence League (EDL) march planned on the same day. Few EDL members were in the pub on the square and exchanged mild abuse with the UAF lot.

UAF marched through the streets to the Castle Road which was the initial end of EDL march.

When EDL turned up, its members were trying the break through the police, verbally and physically - photo HERE - attacking the press. Several arrests were made.

After the clashes and scuffles EDL continued marching up the Castle Road where they held their rally and were escorted to the train station after that.

Upney Station, Barking, Essex. Around 20 protesters met up at Upney tube station in Barking to oppose BNP leader's Nick Griffin election campaign for the Barking's constituency in the next general elections.

Protestors were hoping that Nick Griffin would take a train to Upney and walk through the borough to meet his potential voters. However, this walkaround happened about 2 hours prior to this protest and BNP leader wasn't challenged by any anti-fascist group. Why would he get off at Upney, where there is nothing around, instead of at the main Barking's station anyway??

18th November 2009, Trafalgar Square, London. Around 1,000 Algerian football supporters stormed London's Trafalfar Square after Algeria beat Egypt 1-0 in 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. This win means Algeria has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 23 years.

Chuffed supporters were setting off fireworks from the crowd.

Algerian celebrations in London were peaceful as opposed to the situation in Cairo and Algeria. In Algeria 14 people were killed and 250 injured. Read the full story HERE. Is football worth it?
As I was leaving at 11.30pm, Trafalgar Square was still in a full swing of Algerian celebrations.

Saturday November 14, Glasgow. Scottish defence league (SDL) march was banned by the local authorities so them lads held 'a meeting' in a pub in the North part of the town. Protest by United Against Fascism (UAF) and other groups was on and started with a rally at Glasgow Green by the Nelson's Monument. At least 1000 people gathered to listen to the speeches.

As we learned that SDL group was in the pub, we decided to stick with a group of anarchists as they were quite fired up and wanted to fight. Group of about 20 of them confronted 3 suspicious looking guys with a little kid. Who knows who they were, probably just a football hooligans, dressed in Ben Sherman. However, anarchists confronted them with abuse such as: "Don't hide behind a baby, you c**t!" or "Call a Social Services, this baby shouldn't be exposed to such a c**t as his dad is!" Pretty harsh, I must say, especially in a front of a little kid.

After this little incident, the group set off on an epic run through the streets of Glasgow to meet the SDL lot in a pub in the north part of the town. To everyone's disappointment, the SDL was gone, escorted by the police to the buses and driven away to the outskirts of Glasgow.

Other snappers told us we didn't miss much. V-signs for the cameras and some chanting. Police did a good job in not letting those two groups to meet. What it meant for us was that we didn't even get a glimpse of a 60+ strong crowd of SDL.
In the meantime, around 3000 opponents of far right set off on a march from Glasgow Green to George Square.

One brave, or rather stupid drunk confronted the march.

March ended with a rally at George Square. There were minor clashes in the city centre later in the afternoon and few arrests were made.

Around 150 people gathered at London's Iran Embassy to mark the 30th anniversary of the American Embassy occupation in Tehran, Iran. On 4th November 1979, a faction of Islamic Republic (the pro-Khomeini students) took its emlployees hostage for 400 days. This day marks the consodolation of the Islamic regime in Iran and Islamist reaction; thus black day for people.
People with green flags showed their solidarity with the Green Movement in Iran.

No to Sharia Demos, London, 31 oct 2009

Halloween 2009. I was torn between going Leeds to cover yet another EDL protest and staying in London covering the march for Sharia, led by Muslim extremist Anjem Choudary. Decision was to stay in London and see the other side, the extreme Muslims.

However, the march for Sharia was called off last minute by Islam4UK organization. Even though it was called off, few organizations, right-wing English groups the English Democrats and March For England along with moderate Muslims group British Muslims for Secular Democracy, still turned up at Piccadilly Circus to show their opposition to Sharia law.

Sitting on the steps of the Eros statue I spotted a familiar face. Vaclav Havel, the first democratic president of the Czech Republic after the Velvet Revolution (Wiki link) in 1989 which meant the end of communist era in Eastern Europe. Very random seeing him amongst those two groups not knowing what's happening before I explained the whole situation to him. That was the highlight of my Halloween 2009.

Stop the War demo, London, 24th oct 2009

Thousands of anti-war protesters gathered at London's Hyde Park to march through the centre of London on the 8th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan.

Peaceful protest was led by Lance Corporal Joe Glenton, who is facing court martial for refusing to return to Afghanistan.

March ended at Trafalgar Square where campaigners and anti-war activists held their speeches.

During the speeches anti-war activists confronted few alleged Nazis, EDL, football hooligans or whoever they were.

Police, however, did a good job protecting them and led them away to the safety of police van and drove them away.

Thursday 22nd October 2009. Anti-fascist gathered outside BBC studios at White City, London to protest against BNP (British National Party) leader Nick Griffin's appearance on BBC programme Question Time.

As soon as I got between the police lines and protesters, one police officer (the one on the right on the picture bellow) started kicking me in the hips and thighs. When I confronted him, he replied: "If you won't stop kicking me, I kick you back!" Oh, what a lovely man.

Protesters wanted to break through the police lines but were stopped.

Earlier that day, before I arrived at BBC HQ and missed it (!!) around 30 demonstrators managed to break through the main gate and stormed in. However, security and police were on it and protesters and journalists were lead or dragged back outside the gate.

The crowd tried to open the gate one more time but this time, riot police was called for help to hold the gate from inside and the break-in attempt was unsuccessful this time.

As we made our way towards the back exit hoping to get a glimpse of Nick Griffin leaving the BBC studios, the mob decided to make its way there too and block the street. But cheeky Mr. Griffin used the front entrance to leave and neither press or protesters managed to get an autograph.

Saturday 10th Oct 2009. United Against Fascism gathered at Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens to stage a counter protest against English Defence League demonstration against extremist Muslims.

Police let them two groups exchange verbal abuse and after a while EDL were escorted by them through the back streets to the designated place in Piccadilly Gardens for their protest, trying to avoid any possible clashes with UAF.

UAF, however managed to get in front of EDL as they were being escorted onto the square. Minor scuffle and pushes by the police happened there, mainly due to a limited space.

Whilst EDL waited for police to clear the way with police dogs one member of this 'non racist' organization couldn't help himself and showed his 'true' face. How ridiculous is it to nazi salute and hold British flag in the other hand?

Police used dogs to clear the way for EDL. One dog attacked another photographer and one other person and that deter even more violence.

EDL made it safely to the square and both groups were separated by police and dogs.

Both groups were under the watchfull eye of the police so the only where any troubles could happen were the streets on which small groups of EDL and UAF members were wandering.

More EDL members joined the lot in the square and more arrests were made.

UAF and Muslims were running around the square trying to break the police lines and they did manage on one occasion. However, police on horses and with batons quickly ordered them back to the square to join other protesters. What they were trying to achieve is a mystery to me. Attack the EDL from behind the police lines? Impossible. Perhaps they were just bored or hungry and thirsty and wanted to hit the nearest McDonald's. Don't know.

After 5pm police escorted the EDL lot from the square and they march through the streets of Manchester to the Manchester's Victoria Station. Is EDL really non-racist organization? How does "If you hate Pakis clap your hands!" sound? Another chant "Let's go fucking mental!" wasn't too pleasant to hear either. Yes, one member of EDL was of mixed race so we could argue about racist or non-racist organization, however, nazi saluts and chants of hate were seen and heard.

As in Birmingham, buses were ready and the whole group was driven away to the main train station. Not sure how legal it is to look through the phone of the man who got arrested but that's what riot police did to one guy.

EDL supporters travelled to Manchester from all over the England. There was Luton, Southampton, Birmingham, Leeds, London's divisions.... After being dropped off at the station, most of them boarded the trains and headed back.

Next EDL's protest is planned in Leeds on Halloween. Welsh Defence League is protesting in Swansea on 17 Oct and in Newport on 24 Oct. Scottish Defence League's protest in Glasgow is taking place on 14 Nov.

Wandsworth Road shooting - 8 Oct 2009.

As I walked home tonight I couldn't overlook the increased police activity in the area i live in.

I soon learned that there was a shooting earlier on. Reaction of a pedestrian who asked the police officer the same question was priceless: ''Oh, not again, for fuck's sake!''

One shooting happened in July this year.
In April this year, a teenage boy was stabbed to death in Larkhall Park, just off Wandsworth Road.

But London is a big city and as in any other big city in the world, violence, of any kind, is occurring daily. Be it Mile End, Dhaka, Washington.... It just weird going home and seeing forensic officers on your doorstep.

UK mass rally against mandatory vaccinations took place in London's Parliament Square Gardens on Saturday 3rd Oct 2009. Around 50 people, mainly families with kids gathered in front of the Houses Of Parliament to protest against proposed mandatory vaccinations to prevent the spread of swine flu.

Unconscious - 17 Sep 2009

I walked past The Connection at St. Martin-In-The-Field last Thursday and saw an unconscious handcuffed man lying on the floor surrounded by police officers, one of them in plain clothes.

As soon as I started photographing him I was challenged by them. Questions were asked like why am I doing it and was threatened that my camera will be seized. After a brief conversation and explaining I am a member of a press they let me loose.

But what am I meant to think seeing an unconscious handcuffed man bleeding from his wrists? One police officer tells me he banged his head therefore the blood. Oh really? The only blood I saw was the one pouring from his wrists and saliva coming out of his mouth.

Police even called for back up and within minutes 2 police vans arrived. Well, they obviously knew more and weren't keen to share any other info with me at all. God knows what happened. Police being a bit too hard on a tramp? Or was he causing trouble? Or maybe he just passed out. When I returned to the scene 10 mins later the man was still unconscious but had no handcuffs on. Sadly I wasn't able to get another snap.

Al-Quds Day march - 13th Sep 2009

Al-Quds Day. Every year people around the world march during the last week of Ramadan, in support of the rights of the Palestinian people. Supporters of Palestine set off from London's Marble Arch.

And after an unsuccessful protest at Harrow on Friday, EDL , about 30 of them, held a counter-protest at London's Piccadilly Circus.

March went down Park Lane and then turned left at Hyde Park Corner to walk up the Piccadilly Circus.
At the Piccadilly Circus both groups exchanged abuse.

March ended with a rally on Pall Mall. No clashes between EDL and Palestinian supporters were reported nor seen.

Friday, the holy day for Muslims.
11th Sep 2009, 8th anniversary of bombings in New York on the World Trade Centre.
Also from 21st August till 19th Sep 2009, it's Ramadan, a holy month of fasting for Muslims.

English Defense League (EDL) and Stop Islamisation Of Europe (SIOE) couldn't chose a better day for protesting against new mosque being build in Harrow, North West London. As the protest was announced and everyone was aware, more than a thousand people, mainly Muslims and few some anti-fascist, gathered at the mosque from 1pm.

One brave EDL member was spotted right in the middle of the Muslim's crowd taking photos of them and then sending them to his mates who were sat in the pub down the road. What a tactics!

The EDL protest never happened but few EDL members tried to cause some small meaningless trouble. Within seconds hundreds of Muslims run after them only to be stopped by the police.

EDL was taken to safety, questioned and then led away to back streets where their cars were paked. Few of them were arrested.

One other arrest was made near the mosque and as soon as young Muslims noticed, they made a run for it chasing policemen arresting another guy on the bridge.

The biggest trouble were on the bridge. I overheard one guy shouting: "If there is no BNP let's f*** up the police instead." Bottles, bricks and fireworks were thrown at the police and at the press.

Youths clashed with the police on a couple of other occasions, near the mosque and at a nearby car park, again throwing bottles.

By 8pm most of the people had dispersed and everything was back to normal.

DSEi Dinner Party demo@London Hilton - 10th Sep 2009

About 30 activists gathered in front of London Hilton on Park Lane where DSEi delegates' dinner party was held.

After about half an hour chanting 'murdering scum' and 'stop the arms trade', around 40 police officers stormed in surrounding the protesters.

After 20 mins of a sit down, Police issued section 14 order, people were moved away from the Hilton and 10 arrest were made on breach of section 14.

Full text of section 14 of Public Order Act 1986:

14.—( 1) If the senior police officer, having regard to the time or place at which and the circumstances in which any public assembly is being held or is intended to be held, reasonably believes that—

(a) it may result in serious public disorder, serious damage to property or serious disruption to the life of the community, or

(b) the purpose of the persons organising it is the intimidation of others with a view to compelling them not to do an act they have a right to do, or to do an act they have a right not to do, he may give directions imposing on the persons organising or taking part in the assembly such conditions as to the place at which the assembly may be (or continue to be) held, its maximum duration, or the maximum number of persons who may constitute it, as appear to him necessary to prevent such disorder, damage, disruption or intimidation.

(2) In subsection (1) “the senior police officer” means—

(a) in relation to an assembly being held, the most senior in rank of the police officers present at the scene, and

(b) in relation to an assembly intended to be held, the chief officer of police.

(3) A direction given by a chief officer of police by virtue of subsection (2)(b) shall be given in writing.

(4) A person who organises a public assembly and knowingly fails to comply with a condition imposed under this section is guilty of an offence, but it is a defence for him to prove that the failure arose from circumstances beyond his control.

(5) A person who takes part in a public assembly and knowingly fails to comply with a condition imposed under this section is guilty of an offence, but it is a defence for him to prove that the failure arose from circumstances beyond his control.

(6) A person who incites another to commit an offence under subsection (5) is guilty of an offence.

(7) A constable in uniform may arrest without warrant anyone he reasonably suspects is committing an offence under subsection (4), (5) or (6).

(8) A person guilty of an offence under subsection (4) is liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding level 4 on the standard scale or both.

(9) A person guilty of an offence under subsection (5) is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.

(10) A person guilty of an offence under subsection (6) is liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding level 4 on the standard scale or both, notwithstanding section 45(3) of the Magistrates’ Courts Act 1980.

Disarm DSEi protest - 8th Sep 2009

As the biggest weapon convention, DSEi, in the world is taking place in London's ExCeL center between 8-11 Sep, activists held a protest against arms trade. Starting at RBS bank at Aldgate.

They marched through the city of London targeting various financial institutions which are involved in financing the arms trade. Such as Barclays bank, HSBS and others.

At BT offices the crowd managed to break inside.

Last stop was AXA Management building where stunned security officers were left with a smashed front door.

On Saturday 5th September I set off on a journey to Birmingham where EDL (English Defense League) held a protest against militant Islamic communities in Britain.

The protest was quite peaceful till EDL clashed with counter-protesters, UAF (United Against Fascism).

Abuse was thrown and few EDL and UAF members became loose, fighting one another leading to a few arrests.

After the arrests police decided to kettle EDL in a pub (???) even though they wanted to march. What a stupid idea to keep this lot in the pub for a few hours?

But with UAF and few Asian kids waiting round the corner on a busy main street in Birmingham, police decided to bring in two double deckers and drove quite drunk EDL lot away in them.

G8 summit, L'Aquila, Italy. 10th July 2009.

Last day of the summit. The biggest demonstration took place in the town of L'Aquila. The town where earthquake struck in the early hours on 6 April 2009 killing many.

Around 2000 protesters including socialists, anarchists, trade unionists and others gathered on the road ready to march uphill 8km in soaring heat to the final destination. L'Aquila.

Reaching the destination after a couple of hours I was stunned noticing it was a ghost town. No one apart from the press, police and protesters was in the town. Houses were abandoned, cars left on the streets. People became homeless and are now living in the tent cities all around L'Aquila.

Anyway, after the crowd reached the police lines, tension was high and so were the expectations but nothing happened. Italians bickered amongst themselves with some of them wanting to fight the police but most of them didn't.

And of course, it turned into a media circus after everyone realized no riot will happen.

G8 summit, Detention Centre, Rome. 9th July 2009.

Hopes that second day of protests would bring us more excitement and more useable work were high but it never happened. The meeting point was a massive car park by the detention centre near Fiumicino Airport. Bit too far from the city centre.

It turns out that programme of this day is to entertain the immigrants behind the concrete wall by playing reggae to them. Obviously the odd cheer from behind the wall was heard as this must had been the first occasion for immigrants to experience such 'an excitement'.

Next thing I hear, in several languages including Italian (obviously), English, French, Spanish, German and Polish, is them activists asking everyone to bring bottles with water. Bottles were be thrown over the massive big concrete wall for detainees to drink. Apparantly they live on a litre of water per person a day.

After all the bottles were thrown, most of them landed before the wall of course, activists decided it was a time to pay a tribute to another of earth's element. Fire. They set on fire a fake video camera they've brought in earlier in a day.

And this was the end of yet another and not were productive nor exciting day.

G8 summit in Italy, that brings back memories from JULY 2001 when protests turned violent, thousands of people marched the streets and one person was shot dead.

This year however didn't bring any of such violence nor there were protests on a large scales. Probably as carabinieri and activists didn't want any nasty surprises to happen.

Yes, there were few protests such as the one on Piazza Barberini organized by Trade Unionists on Wednesday 8th July.

Another protest on the same day took place near the prison where few activists were held after being arrested for taking part in a protest the night before. However, this protest was merely a protest but rather a youth's and local gypsies' gathering.

Climate Camp - march against oil companies. 1st Sep 2009.

So, the day before last day of the Climate Camp, climate activists made their way into London to show their disgust over oil companies such as British Petrol and Shell.

No one got arrested for causing criminal damage to the property. Police just let them hippies to get on with their fun and stood back and watched.

Climate activists descended on London on wednesday 26th August 2009. Various 'swoop' positions were announced but that's all everyone, apart from few knew. No one knew where the Climate Camp will be set up. This was done on purpose - mice and cat game = activists - police. I found it quite amusing as texts of where to go next were coming in. Amusing and lame. But then what would you expect from a bunch of 'climate' hippies. Maybe a guitar song and some cous-cous.

The swoop group I started gathered at St. James's Square where BP headquarters is situated at. First text where to go next arrived just after 1pm. Trafalgar sq. Merely 10mins walk. 5 cigarettes and long 45mins later another text.

Charing Cross Station. Merely 2mins walk. Lame. Last text - go to Lewisham station and then trek to Blackheath.
Urgh! We all have been hoping Camp would be set up somewhere central but no, Blackheath!!

I must say the location of the camp was carefuly chosen. With a lovely view over the London's financial districk, Canary Wharf. On a public land where, funnily
enough, them hippies set up their 'code of climate camp conduct', and where hoping every single journalist would follow it.

I stayed at the camp till the late hours waiting for one shot only to return the next day finding the camp's policy ridiculous. And so the fact I had to have a minder with me looking over my shoulder checking up on me what Im taking pictures of .
